Rules of the Road Setting

Author’s Note: This piece of writing is to show my understanding of why the setting of the story matters and how it would affect the characters if the setting was different.

Imagine that you are going on a road trip with your boss and you get to your hotel for the night, and the hotel is over booked. What would you do? Well in the book Rules of the Road, Jenna and Mrs.Gladstone were offered to double up with people in the same room. At first they weren’t sure about it, but they had nowhere else to stay for the night. When they got into the room the thought that they would have a bed to sleep on. But no they ended up sleeping in the closet.

This setting of the book affects the plot because before this point in the book the plot has been taken place either at Jenna’s house, the shoe store, or in the car on the road. Going to the hotel has changed the plot because it is being taken place in a different place and gives a greater chance for the main conflicts in the book occur.

If Jenna and Mrs.Gladstone were in a different setting rather than sharing a hotel room with complete strangers I think this would change the plot because then they wouldn’t have to sleep in a closet, have the chance of strangers stealing their things, and they wouldn’t have to worry about talking about things without them being over herd.

I think that if Jenna and Mrs.Gladstone were in a different setting it would change how they act because they wouldn’t need to worry about anything happening to them while they are sharing the room. Even though they got to know the people that they were sharing the room with that still doesn’t make them friends. Just because you have known someone for a day you might not know the real person. Jenna and Mrs.Gladstone still had to take precaution because they didn’t want anything to happen to them. Anything that could happen that night of while they are at the hotel could completely change the plot of the book because it could then change the climax.

Even though they got through the night sleeping in the closet, Jenna and Mrs.Gladstone got to know each other better and got to build their trust with each other. This is important sense they are going to be spending a lot of time together on the road trip to Texas.
